Meet the rescued kitties

Chelsea Powrie

Last week, Summerland animal sanctuary Critteraid rescued 50 cats from unsafe living conditions in Kaleden.

The cats are now up for adoption, and according to animal director Jess Byer, they are very affectionate and, despite a few health hiccups, robust and ready for their forever homes.

"There are quite a few medical issues because of their living conditions," Byer said. "We have a sweet little boy named Comrade, who sadly was born with what's called a club foot."

Comrade will need to have his foot amputated. Another kitten has eye damage and will likely lose one eye, and a second cat appears to be completely blind.

Despite these setbacks, the cats are happy and energetic, and Byer said they will make a great addition to a family.

"We are getting them ready for new homes," Byer said. "They're all very loving and very sweet."

Byer said that the reason the population of cats in that household got out of hand was a lack of spaying and neutering.

"There's a lot of great places to reach out to for lower cost spay and neuters," she said, adding people can call Critteraid to find out options.

An adoption event was held at Critteraid this Saturday, but there are still plenty of cats to adopt. For more information, visit Critteraid's website or call Byer at 250-488-3226.
