PenSAR saves the day

Penticton and District Search and Rescue had to scramble Monday night to help save a person who ran into trouble while driving an all terrain vehicle east of OK Falls.

A total of 15 SAR members mobilized after they received a call from Victoria’s Emergency Coordination centre  just after 5:45 p.m. Monday evening.

PenSAR search manager, Randy Brown, received a 911 call reporting that a 34-year-old female was down a steep embankment after rolling her quad ATV. The female had undisclosed serious Injuries that required immediate evacuation.

PenSAR responded with a three-person helicopter team and two rescue vehicles to an area east of OK Falls on 200 Forest Service Road.

When the chopper team arrived on scene and began the extraction after locating the female about 40 feet down a steep hillside. Rescue crews also found a 10-year-old boy who involved in the incident and he was turned over to emergency health personnel.  The young male had sustained a possible fracture but was not injured as seriously as the female driver of the ATV.

During the course of the operation, it became apparent that the female driver would need emergency extraction.

SAR members turned over the injured persons to EHS personnel who began treatments of the two individuals and transported them to hospital by helicopter and ground transport.

The full extent of the injuries are not known at this time.
