Pick up a summer book

Chelsea Powrie

Summer vacation is in full swing, and this week a number of kids reading programs are starting up at the Penticton Library.

"The big exciting thing is the summer reading club for kids," said librarian Stephanie James. "So every week there is a theme, so I know there is a dance theme, a food theme, there's a movie theme."

The program encourages kids to read over the summer so they retain literacy skills learned over the school year.

And it isn't just kids who can exercise their brains this summer. There are teen and adult programs as well.

"For teens, we have a really exciting thing going on, it's called teen summer takeover," James said. "They have to sign up at the library, they receive a passport, and there are different challenges where they have to read, to create, do things."

Teens can pick up their passport and fill out the passport throughout the summer, while interacting with the library through social media.

"There are some absolutely amazing prizes to be won with this, there is a tablet," James said. "If I was a teen I'd be signing up for this in a quick minute, because oh my gosh."

Adults can get in on the summer reading fun as well.

"Lastly, because summer programming is not all for kids, there is Penticton Reads, which is the adult summer reading club," James said.

To participate, a person needs to fill out a ballot for the book they've read or listened to in audio form, which makes the reader eligible for weekly prize draws and the grand prize, a $50 gift certificate to Theo's Restaurant.

For more information on how to participate in any of these summer programs, visit the library website here or stop by in person.
