Fence builders wanted

Chelsea Powrie

The many pasture animals at Critteraid in Summerland need fences to keep them safe, and the animal shelter is always looking for volunteers to help them maintain their paddocks.

The 10-acre sanctuary is home to alpacas, pigs, horses and cows in its fields.

"With pasture animals comes a lot of fence repair," said animal director Jess Byer. "From pigs that like to dig underneath to cows that like to rub and itch, there's always a need for repair."

Byer said she is grateful that volunteers have been putting in 12-hour days to help repair fences, but that even a little bit of donated time or money would help as well.

"We just want to make sure people know that even though it's hard to volunteer every day, you can volunteer a couple hours a week, you can even put in for a fence post and donate some money, that all helps us take better care of these wonderful babies that call our place home," Byer said.

Plus, volunteers get to interact with the animals, like Ruby the friendly pig.
