Evacuation order reduced

UPDATE: 3:55 p.m.

Only 15 homes remain under an evacuation order near Oliver Saturday afternoon after the regional district removed the order for 17 addresses from earlier in the morning.

The evacuation was originally ordered just after 9 a.m. Saturday, due to "immediate danger to life safety" from rising water behind dams above Sportsmens Bowl Road.

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen says that danger remains for the 15 homes still under the order.

An Emergency Social Services reception centre has been set up at the Oliver Legion, located at 6417 Main Street.

The remaining homes under the evacuation order are all on Sportsmens Bowl Road, and include the addresses: 102, 124, 149, 168, 178, 194, 274, 296, 306, 310, 322, 328, 340, 344, 352.

ORIGINAL: 9:20 a.m.

Officials have ordered the evacuation of 33 homes in the Sportsman's Bowl area near Oliver due to flood concerns.

The evacuation comes after 148 homes were put under evacuation alert Monday due to rising water behind four dams above the homes.

Zoe Kirk, with the RDOS Emergency Operations Centre, said residents are being urged to evacuate to the Legion in Oliver, 6417 Main St.

“We would like people to gather their family and valuables and get to the ESS reception centre even if they are not going to stay in a hotel or be put up we would like them to register so we know they are safe,” said Kirk. “We need to make sure we have accounted for everyone. So it's really important to stop in at the emergency centre and report in.”

On Thursday, the RDOS said the flooding risk had decreased, but that residents should remain vigilant as the snowpack melts.

Castanet will have more information as it becomes available.
