Speedway cars ready to race

Penticton, start your engines.

This Sunday, April 22 is opening day at Penticton Speedway, and preparations are well underway at the track.

"We're praying for good weather, and it's looking good right now for Sunday afternoon," said longtime owner Johnny Aantjes. "The track's coming around, car count's looking really good, we feel like it's going to be a great kickoff."

Aantjes promised a variety of exciting race classes including Hornets, Street Stocks, Hit-to-Pass and the feature class for 2018, Late  Models. Tickets can be purchased at the gate with family pricing available, and kids under 10 are free with an adult.

The 1/4 mile paved oval track has been in operation 49 years, and Aantjes said 2017 was a record-breaking success.

On top of racing, the speedway also hosts popular events like the Bull-A-Rama in July, where bull riders from around Western Canada will compete for thousands in purse money. This year, a second bull event has been added in May due to popular demand, as well as barrel racing and junior steer riding.

Races begin at 2 p.m. Sunday. For more information and to view the track's full season schedule, visit the Penticton Speedway website.
