Modular housing coming

The provincial government announced today 52 modular homes for low-income residents will be placed at the provincially-owned Skaha Sunrise Motel at the corner of Skaha Lake Road and Green Avenue West.

Minister of Housing Selina Robinson was in Penticton today and made the announcement at Triple M Modular, which will manufacture the homes.

“We’re acting to provide a rapid solution to homelessness in the community, but we’re also thrilled that part of the solution here in Penticton involves a local company,” said Robinson.

ASK Wellness has been selected to operate the building, which will have 24/7 support services. Each unit will include a bathroom and kitchen, with a shared space for programming and laundry facilities.

Support such as meal programs, life employment skills and health and wellness supports will also be offered.

"We are very grateful for the Province and BC Housing for providing housing for some our most vulnerable, to provide basic shelter and hopefully initiate the process to regain some dignity and help towards contributing to a healthier community,” mayor Andrew Jakubeit said.

An open house for nearby residents and businesses will be scheduled later in April. The project is still subject to city council approval through the rezoning process for the project.

The Skaha Sunrise Motel has been operated by BC Housing and rented out to low-income residents since 2010. None of the existing tenants will be required to relocate.

The homes are expected to be up and running by the end of the year.
