Lake being pumped out

More water is heading towards Willowbrook, as the provincial government orders the St. Andrews Golf Course south of Kaleden to pump out Prather Lake.

Prather Lake — located in the middle of the golf course — has no natural outlet, and the province has ordered the water levels lowered in advance of expected rain and snow melt.

“Water from the lake will be pumped into the headwaters of Kearns Creek,” an RDOS news release says. “Kearns Creek runs downstream to the community of Willowbrook, which is under a state of local emergency due to flooding and high water in an upstream dam.”

The RDOS says it will be working with the golf course to manage pumping and protect homes in the watershed.

“Moving water through the system in a controlled way now will help prevent uncontrolled or emergency pumping later this spring,” the RDOS says.

The Ministry of Transportation will also be removing a section of road along Carr Crescent in Willowbrook to allow for water to move downstream more effectively.

The Kearns Creek Dam above Willowbrook will continue to be closely monitored. Last week, the provincial government issued a draw down order the lower the water levels in the reservoir, reducing the risk to the dam “significantly.”

Residents, meanwhile, remain hard at work protecting their properties with sandbags. Volunteers are asked to contact Brenda Boye at 250-498-6999.
