Horgan: Jail Liberals' fault

At his Penticton news conference Tuesday, B.C. Premier John Horgan acknowledged recent lawsuits at the Okanagan Correctional Centre, pinning the blame on the previous government.

"Certainly we’ve had no shortage of problems in the past eight months unearthing challenges that the previous government was unable to deal with," Horgan said.

There have been five lawsuits in as many months from the inmates at the jail for alleging misconduct or negligence from correctional officers.

He said the issue had been "pushed down the road" to his government by Christy Clark and the Liberals, comparing the situation with the jail to the dire financial straits that ICBC is in.

"Similarly, the correctional facility is going through growing pains and as a new government we’re responsible to make sure that we address those," Horgan said.

He expressed confidence in the attorney and solicitor generals, saying he is sure they will take "whatever steps they need to make this right for the institution and the community."
