Falling rock kills man

UPDATE 3:25 p.m.

The Penticton RCMP has confirmed an 81-year-old man has died as a result of a fatal rockslide in Okanagan Falls.

Police were alerted of the rockslide at about 9:17 a.m. on Sunday, which was blocking Green Lake Rd.

When officers arrived, a large boulder was on the road with a deceased male on the property above the road.

“Large boulders around the property appeared to have just come down and it was evident the residence had been struck,” Cpl. Dan Moskaluk said. “It is believed the homeowner had been outside when he was struck by the falling boulder.”

The 81-year-old resident of the home was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Penticton RCMP continue to assist the BC Coroners Services with their investigation into the incident and the man’s death.

UPDATE: 1:50 p.m.

A deadly rock fall in Okanagan Falls crashed past the front door of a home.

At the scene, Castanet's Colin Dacre says it appears the slide hit the front door area of the home, but did not smash inside the building. It then kept moving past the structure.

It appears the victim was likely struck while outside the home.

Ministry of Transportation staff are assessing the scene.

The Okanagan Falls Volunteer Fire Department was called at 12:50 p.m. to a home about two kilometres up the road, along the Okanagan River, to assist BC Ambulance paramedics and the coroner in extracting a body from a home that had been hit by a rock fall.

“It's a troubled area, not for the house, but it's been a troubled area for the road in the past,” Fire Chief Rob Oliver said.

There is no information on the age or identity of the victim.

Castanet has reached out to the RCMP for more information and will update.
