Women helping women

International Women's Day was well represented on Main Street in Penticton Thursday, with feminist speakers and female-oriented discussions.

Mondo Creation, a business which helps promote and coach other small businesses, hosted a symposium with various activities and lectures.

Anita Anand is a registered life and parenting coach from Vancouver, who spent the day at Mondo Creation speaking and heading a workshop on wholeheartedness, and giving tips on living and leading as women.

"What is it that gets in the way of women claiming their worthiness? It's the feeling of not begin good enough," Anand said. "We need to make sure we are connecting to our worthiness and closing the gap between the genders over time."

"It has so much importance in terms of us claiming our place in this world as mothers, as daughters, as teachers, as partners, and to ask for what we deserve," Anand said.

Mondo Creation founder Liza Lauze felt it was an easy decision to host a feminist event on International Women's Day.

"If there was a year to celebrate International Women's Day, this was it," Lauze said. "The best way to remedy any problem is bring women together and talk about collaboration between women."

Her business helps up-and-coming artisans thrive, and she believes in women helping other women achieve their dreams.

"Feminist is an interesting word, but I'd really like it to mean that we are holistic in our approach, that we are purpose-driven, than we seek out our own goals," Lauze said.

Local resident Leda Rose-Cedar attended the event, and believes more awareness of women's rights issues is always a good thing.

"I've been in a feminist movement since the 80s," Rose-Cedar said. "It's about women's wellness, the Me Too movement has happened, and now we no longer have to respond to the social pressures on women, it's our journey and we own it."

"The more women get involved, the more they might feel more empowered or feel that it's more timely to get involved for each and every one of us e to make a difference. It's vital."
