Where's our study?

Following in the footsteps of the Okanagan-Skaha school district, the Town of Osoyoos is requesting the release of a provincial education report kept under wraps.

The mayor of Osoyoos, Sue McKortoff, sent a letter to Premier John Horgan on behalf of the town on Monday requesting access to a Rural Education Report completed under the previous Liberal government, of which Boundary-Similkameen MLA Linda Larsen was the chair.

The report, which drew heavily on public and rural government input, was never made public following the change from Liberal to NDP government, and Osoyoos is only the latest community to speak out

A letter with almost identical wording was sent from School District 53, Okanagan-Similkameen, on Friday, and School District 67 in Penticton voted last week to send their own version as well.

"Releasing this report to school districts and to the public ensures transparency of the work and respects the time boards, staff and individuals made to contribute to telephone conversations, in-person discussions and online submissions," McKortoff wrote in the letter. "We valued the process and have been waiting on the results."

The Ministry of Education said last week that there were no plans to release the study, though parts of its findings would be used in an updated education funding model review this summer.
