Sow your own seeds

It might not seem like gardening season yet, but an annual seed event is back in Penticton for both expert and beginner gardeners alike.

The 15th annual Penticton Seedy Saturday will be held on Saturday, Feb. 24 at Okanagan College. The event will feature around 40 vendors, some of which have seeds and others offering much more.

"We will have all kinds of wonderful food, agricultural products, different kinds of gluten-free goods, cheeses, all kinds of cool stuff," said Laurel Brougham, the event's organizer.

There will also be three free growing workshops, titled Permaculture in the Okanagan, Okanagan Dry Land Gardening and How to Sow Seeds for Success.

A seed-swap table will be set up with free seeds, and visitors can also choose to take part in a UBC citizen seed trial, where growers will track the progress of the free seeds they plant.

Brougham said the event isn't just for gardening experts.

"It's for everybody who's interested in growing, there's going to be master gardeners there, so people to answer questions," Brougham said.

"Everybody from experienced gardeners who just want really good organic vegetable and flower seeds and herb seeds, to people who want to learn how to garden."

Seedy Saturday will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, and a $2 donation is requested at the door.
