Team up against dementia

Registration is now open for teams interested in participating in a walk for Alzheimer's research in Penticton, with a possible prize for teams who start fundraising this month.

An estimated 70,000 British Columbians are currently living with dementia, and the Investors Group Walk for Alzheimer's aims to show them they aren't alone.

Organizers say it's a fun, family-friendly event, and that participating in a team makes the movement more powerful.

"Teams are so integral to the Walk, and they bring a strong sense of community. Seeing people walk and fundraise to honour someone close to them who has been affected by dementia is so meaningful," said Maribeth Friesen, Alzheimer Society of B.C.'s local regional manager.

"It’s such a wonderful way to bring people in your life together, while helping to create a movement to show people on the dementia journey that they do not have to walk alone."

Teams can register online and begin fundraising right away. As extra incentive, teams that raise $500 by Feb. 28 will be entered to win $500 worth of Amazon gift cards.

All money raised through the event will directly fund support, education and learning opportunities for people with dementia and their families, as well as supporting research into causes and cures.

This year's will take place in 23 locations across the province on Sunday, May 6. For more information or to register, visit the Walk for Alzheimer's website.
