Students learn tourism trade

Grade 8 students at KVR middle school are working on a series of tourism-related projects to help get them involved in this important industry for Penticton.

The Youth Influencers Program focuses on five key themes: Why live here, stewardship, business and economy, culture and fun and activity.

The students will explore the themes through projects such as writing blogs and social media posts, creating videos and designing marketing materials.

Travel Penticton Executive Director Thom Tischik came up with the idea, and believes the social media and marketing skills that participants will learn will help them with future employment in other areas.

"Tourism is a major contributor to the economic and environmental stability of Penticton. Whether they know it or not, youth has a huge influence in this arena," Tischik said.

Project co-ordinator Jo Charnock said she hopes to "encourage pride of community, promote active lifestyle and encourage local environmental stewardship."

Computer studies teacher at KVR Rochelle Hannon said her students are excited to be leading the way in this one-of-a-kind program.

"The initial projects are underway and the work produced so far has been impressive," Hannon said.

Some of the initial Youth Influencer blogs have been posted online, and can be viewed here
