'Works well with everyone'

Teachers describe Penticton Secondary student Josephine Kay as positive and helpful to her peers — praise that helped her become the Penticton Rotary Club's Student of the Month for February.

“[She] works well with everyone in the classes," said Josh Heinrich, Biology 12 teacher. "Willing to tutor others that are not usually in her peer group."

Kay is a diligent Grade 12 student achieving high marks in all her courses. She is a member of the senior leadership group that meets weekly and volunteers at school and in the community, and a key member of the choir and the theatre.

Although she enjoys all classes, her favourite classes are Math and English.

She recognizes the importance of being culturally aware and the value of language to build communication skills.

“Josephine is one of the most empathetic students we have in our building”, said Bo Boxall, her Senior Leadership teacher and vice-principal.

Last year, she participated in a three-month exchange program in Belgium. Both the experience of living in a large European city and attending a French-language private school were challenging new experiences for Kay.

“I became more confident because of learning to interact in different settings," Kay said.

Music is a big part of Kay’s life. She has been a member of the Musaic Vocal Ensemble and used to play the violin, and is now active in theatre and singing.

"There has always been music in our home and dancing in the kitchen," Kay said. "When I was young, I had so much energy, singing and acting was a good way to channel it."

She has been cast as the title role in "Oliver," the school's main stage production this year, and is taking the responsibility seriously.

“I love playing different characters, being able to see different perspectives as I act," Kay said. “It took me 4 years to build my skills, being present, learning and helping backstage. I trust that I will learn my lines, but it’s not just about skills, I have to be compatible working with all the other people involved in the play."
