Scotties 2nd round opens

Championship pool play opens today at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Penticton.

Action starts with a tiebreaker game at 9 a.m. between Ontario and Newfoundland to determine the final team in the eight-team championship group.

The championship pool will see the top four teams from each of the two round-robin pools crossover against the teams from the other pool they haven’t played yet.

B.C.’s Kesa Van Osch of Nanaimo punched her ticket into the championship pool with a win over Newfoundland Wednesday.

“It’s awesome,” Van Osch told Curling Canada after the win “That was our goal coming in.”

“We really wanted to make that second round. That would be a very achievable goal going in. Now we’ll make a new goal going forward.”

B.C. will be joined by the Wildcard and Canadian teams, and Alberta, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Northern Ontario and the winner of Thursday morning’s tiebreaker.

Each team in the championship pool will play four games over the next two days, with the top four teams advancing to the playoffs Saturday and Sunday.

Curling Canada says more than 27,000 people have attended the first five days of the event at the South Okanagan Events Centre.
