Big training in small towns

High school students in the Similkameen will receive hands-on exposure to potential career fields in the next week.

WorkBC's provincial Find Your Fit tour will be at Keremeos Secondary School on Feb. 1, from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., and at Princeton Secondary School on Feb. 6 for the same time slot.

The program sets up career stations at high schools, allowing students to take part in activities and get a feel for various jobs. Some of the activities include making digital graphics, taking someone's blood pressure and completing an electrical circuit.

Information stations are also set up about particular labour markets, to provide students more in-depth career information.

Melanie Mark, the province's Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Training, said the tour gives students experience they need to help think about their career path.

"There will be more than 900,000 job openings in our province over the next 10 years, and B.C. needs a new generation of talent to be ready for those opportunities," Mark said in a news release.

Find Your Fit visited Osoyoos Secondary on Tuesday. The tour will also be at Summerland Secondary School on Feb. 13 and the South Okanagan Secondary School in Oliver on Feb. 15.
