Teacher seizes Tide Pods

The infamous and dangerous “Tide Pod Challenge” has made an appearance at a Penticton middle school.

School District 67 superintendent Wendy Hyer confirmed Monday several laundry detergent pods were confiscated from a middle school student last week.

“Just a middle school student who thought — trying to fit in with the kids, thought he’d bring some in to see if anyone would want to try the challenge,” Hyer said.

The internet meme dares youth to eat one of the laundry detergent packets and post a video to social media.

Hyer said many of the student’s classmates were already well aware of the dangers of eating laundry detergent, and reported him to school administration.

The student’s parents were informed about the situation, and teachers at the school spoke to their classes. None of the pods were ingested, added Hyer.

In the United States, there have been nearly 90 reported cases of poisoning due to eating laundry packets so far this year.
