Pot shop forced to close

An unlicensed medical marijuana dispensary in the Similkameen has closed its doors due to "overwhelming pressure from the local RCMP," according to the business.

Amber Light Compassion Society, located in Cawston, announced on its Facebook page on Saturday that it will be shutting down.

The Society was reportedly raided by police on Friday. Staff were tight lipped when asked about the alleged incident by Castanet, but did write online that "RCMP made this decision" in regards to its closure.

Keremeos RCMP have not yet returned a response.

"It would have been great to have a formal discussion on the topic of cannabis and create a sense of working together, instead of creating a situation where cannabis users are now being pushed to street-level dealers," the Society said on its Facebook page.

The Society also went on to say it would "tread water" until the recreational use of marijuana is legalized, and will hope to eventually reopen at the same location in Cawston.

The business had been open since the fall of 2016. It was the subject of an attempted robbery last summer which led to two people being arrested.
