Aquatic centre needs repairs

Summerland council has approved a grant application for a facility condition assessment of the aging Summerland Aquatic Centre.

The centre is 42 years old and suffers from leaks, termite infestations, cracked walls and outdated mechanical systems.

Lori Mullin, recreation manager for the district, said the information the study will provide is "integral for decision making on further investments into the building versus other options."

The assessment will include engaging a team of consultants to examine whether there are opportunities to extend the life of the aquatic centre through upgrades and how much money it would cost to maintain the site until a new one could be built.

The local government infrastructure planning grant would provide $10,000, with a further $40,000 needed from the city's 2018 budget.
