More 'Young Stars' rumours

More rumours are swirling about the future of the NHL Young Stars tournament in Penticton.

Canucks President Trevor Linden told The Athletic Saturday changes are indeed coming to the annual event.

“Young Stars has been a fantastic tournament and Penticton has been a great host,” Linden told The Athletic. “There will be some changes to the format for next year, which will be shared in the near future once all the details have been sorted out.”

Meanwhile, Province writer Jason Botchford reported over the weekend that the Calgary Flames have been trying to move the tournament from Penticton “for years.”

“One of the ideas tabled was that the tournament would be moved around on a rotating basis,” Botchford reported.

The event has been close to moving to Red Deer in the past, he added.

The rumours about a change to the NHL prospect showcase were sparked last week when long-time Edmonton Journal writer Jim Matheson tweeted the event “might not go” in Penticton this September.

In response to Matheson’s tweet last week, Young Stars Classic organizing committee chair and Mayor of Penticton Andrew Jakubeit said the NHL teams assess their partnership with the city on the event on an annual basis.

“We are still working on the details on this year’s event and hope to have something to announce soon," he said.

Penticton has hosted the event since 2010, bringing together top prospects from the Western Canadian NHL teams for a tournament at the South Okanagan Events Centre.
