Fire closes Maggie for day

A small fire this morning in the washroom of Princess Margaret Secondary has closed the school for the day.

Firefighters were called to the school around 11:30 a.m. for a fire alarm.

“Following our school emergency evacuation protocol, all students and staff were directed to the Skaha Lake Middle School gym, while the Penticton Fire department attended to the fire,” principal Roger Wiebe wrote in an email to parents Friday.

The fire was quickly extinguished and contained to the washroom, but there was extensive smoke throughout the first floor, Wiebe added.

“The Fire Department is continuing to assess the damage to the building, and at this point has determined that staff and students will not be able to return to the building for the remainder of the school day.”

There is no indication any staff or students were hurt in the incident.
