'Young Stars' moving on?

The annual NHL Young Stars tournament in Penticton is at risk of not going ahead this year, according to an Edmonton journalist.

Jim Matheson tweeted Thursday the annual fall event at the SOEC featuring NHL prospects from Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary and Winnipeg “might not go.”

“Last fall's annual event was disappointing for calibre of kids taking part, said many NHL scouts,” Matheson said.

Young Stars Classic organizing committee chair and Mayor of Penticton Andrew Jakubeit said the event has always been a partnership between the city and four NHL teams.

“The Young Stars classic has showcased an amazing run of players over the past 7 years,” he said in an email. “Each year, the teams assess their organizational needs and how the tournament fits into their plans.”

“We are still working on the details on this year’s event and hope to have something to announce soon.”

Another Twitter user also pointed out that many Penticton hotels that are historically booked full well in advance of the tournament have rooms available this September.
