Murder/Suicide Update

The names of the couple that died at the Penticton Regional Hospital have been released.

John McCadden, 77, and his 80-year-old wife Lorna McCadden, died in a murder/suicide that took place on Tuesday afternoon.

Lorna had been a patient in PRH since August 1st and was awaiting a placement into a permanent care facility. According to Interior Health CEO Murrey Ramsden, John visited his wife every day.

“It appears that they had a loving, stable relationship. No one could have predicted the motive for this tragedy,” says Ramsden.

Police are continuing to investigate with the help of the Kelowna Major Crimes Unit. According to RCMP Corporal Rick Dellebuur, this was an isolated incident.

“We have no concern for the public's safety or the safety of those people who are in the Penticton Hospital at this time,” says Dellebuur.

Gary Hunter was visiting a friend at the hospital when the police arrived.

“It was rather alarming to look out the window and see the police pull up. I didn't know what was happening, but now that I know I am relieved. I don't feel unsafe coming to visit my friend here, I'm just sad to hear what had happened,” says Hunter.

Ramsden says counselling will be providing for staff to help them deal with this tragedy.
