Repeat offenders sentenced

A Penticton man has been sentenced to five months in prison for stealing a purse and going on a shopping spree with the stolen credit cards.

Richard Meier, 36, pleaded guilty Monday to stealing a purse from a woman at the Bay in Penticton on July 10, 2016. He went on to use the credit cards from the purse to make more than $800 in purchases.

Defence lawyer Michael Patterson said his client’s “long criminal history” has always been fueled by drug addiction. “He keeps trying” to get clean, the lawyer added.

Meier also pleaded guilty to a breach charge out of Surrey and received an additional 15 day sentence.

After credit for time already served, Meier has 21 days left on his sentence.

Upon release, he will be on probation for two years and be required to repay Visa and Mastercard for the fraudulent purchases.

In an unrelated matter Monday morning at the Penticton courthouse, Kristi-Jo Wilson, 42, was sentenced to 60 days in prison for a pair of shoplifting incidents at Wal-Mart and the Big Box Outlet Store in Penticton.

When she was arrested during the second incident at the Big Box Outlet Store on Dec. 7, 2017, she was found in possession of methamphetamine. Her lawyer also attributed her legal troubles to addiction.

After credit for time-served, she will likely be released later today.
