Arrest in attempted car theft

A man is in custody after an attempted carjacking in Penticton on Thursday morning.

A 37-year-old woman contacted Penticton RCMP at 8:45 a.m., following an incident where a man reportedly approached her as she was getting into her car at a local shopping centre.

The suspect allegedly demanded the victim to get out of her car and hand over her keys. After she refused, the suspect asked for money and the woman gave him the small amount she had on her.

The suspect fled on foot, and the female victim was not injured.

Plainclothes officers were able to locate and arrest the suspect within minutes following the incident.

A 24-year-old man from Golden is now being held in custody and is expected to appear in court on Thursday.

Cpl. Ted Manchulenko said the crime was not targeted.

"Penticton RCMP would like to commend the brave actions of the female in this event, and her composure under the traumatic events she faced in this random act," Manchulenko said in a news release.
