PENSAR talks outdoor safety

With multiple rescue calls received monthly from outdoor enthusiasts, Penticton Search and Rescue is taking a chance to talk about safety during outdoor recreation with the public this weekend.

PENSAR members, along with staff from AdventureSmart B.C., will be at True Outdoors on Riverside Drive in Penticton on Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The two groups will discuss trip planning with outdoor adventurers and provide information on topics such as nutrition, dehydration, frostbite any hypothermia.

PENSAR manager Randy Brown noted the timing of this weekend's initiative coincides with colder weather and shorter days being observed in the region.

"Wintertime is a critical time, as we recognize that with below-zero temperatures, getting to injured and lost persons quickly is a priority for us. So we want to see people take the time to be prepared."

Brown added that PENSAR has responded to close to 50 calls this year of people getting lost or injured during outdoor recreation.
