Hatred Graffiti

The old saying about sticks and stones doesn't seem appropriate in this case.

Sometime during the weekend, vandals sprayed a message of hatred across a building on Martin Street in Penticton.

Using phrases like 'wake up Christians,' and 'Islam is cancer,' the graffiti takes up the entire side of an unused building across from the Blue Mule. The words face a parking lot and are not visible by drivers on Martin Street.

Mayor Jake Kimberley says he thinks it is shameful that somebody would do such a thing.

"We've just had a wonderful weekend with people all over the world enjoying our city. It was very disheartening to come into the office on Monday morning and hear about this," says Kimberley.

He says the RCMP are looking into it and the city will be cleaning it up as soon as they are able to.

"That somebody would try and fan racial hatred in our community is unacceptable to me and hopefully the culprit will be caught," says Kimberley.

The RCMP could not be reached for comment.
