Yacht club needs upgrades

The Penticton Yacht Club has a long list of repairs needed in the not too distant future, city council heard this week.

The club’s new general manager Geoff Gowe met with council Tuesday as the marina’s lease is set to lapse at the end of the year.

He said they plan on renewing the one-year lease for now, but will likely be approaching the city next year to negotiate a longer-term multi-year lease for the property so they can secure financing for upgrades.

Gowe said the club is growing, with moorage revenue (+48 per cent), membership (+21 per cent), and food and beverage sales (+110 per cent) increasing significantly since 2015.

However, several docks are in need of replacement or need electrical, fire suppression and water upgrades. Gowe added the club is considering reconfiguring the slips to increase capacity.

The club’s current gas dock is also listing and in need of replacement.

“If we are going to do the projects that we feel need to be done, we will have to ask for a longer term lease,” he said, noting they can't acquire a loan with a one-year lease.

Gowe said they don’t expect to approach the city for financial aid and will have members fund all the upgrades.
