SOEC Questions Approved

City Council has adopted the final wording for the two referendum questions that will soon be facing Penticton residents.

On September 16, voters will take to the polls to answer two questions regarding the South Okanagan Events Centre (SOEC).

Question One regards funding for construction of the SOEC and will be binding. It will read:

“Do you approve of Penticton City Council adopting Bylaw 2006-18 which authorizes borrowing up to $7,000,000 for the South Okanagan Events Centre site servicing and construction improvements and adopting Bylaw 2006-39 which authorizes borrowing up to $29,063,000 for construction of the South Okanagan Events Centre?”

Question Two regards the day-to-day operation of the SOEC and Penticton Trade and Convention Centre and is being included on the ballot by council as a way to gauge public opinion. It will read:

“Do you approve of a management company operating and managing the Memorial Arena, South Okanagan Events Centre and the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre for up to 20 years?”

The second open house regarding the SOEC will be held on September 12, 2 pm at the Trade and Convention Centre to give the public one last chance to find out about the project before going to the polls on September 16.
