Police investigating brushfire

A wildfire earlier this month in Summerland has been confirmed to be human caused, and police are looking to speak with potential witnesses.

The Summerland Fire Department was called to the Princeton-Summerland Road near the McLennan Road intersection around 1:50 p.m. on Sept.1, taking quick control of a roadside brushfire.

“The scene examination by the RCMP, Summerland Fire Dept. and BC Wildfire Services has been completed and has enabled investigators to conclude that the fire was human caused,” Cpl. Dan Moskaluk said in a news release Wednesday evening.

The man who called the fire into 911 told Castanet News at the scene he came across the fire when it was about campfire sized. He and several other passing motorists tried to smother the fire with the help of shovels, but the flames spread quickly.

Anyone that has information about the fire, including photographs or video, is asked to contact the Summerland RCMP at 250-494-7416.
