Monks spread culture

Eleven Tibetan monks are arriving in Penticton Tuesday as a part of a world tour promoting world peace and healing.

The Penticton Art Gallery will be hosting the “Mystical Arts of Tibet,” a globally known group of Tibetan monks that travel the world spreading their culture.

The monks will arrive in Penticton on Sept. 12, with opening ceremonies to be held noon Sept. 13, at the Penticton Art Gallery.

"In the opening ceremonies they are playing their instruments and chanting and that in itself is pretty amazing," said Paul Crawford, director/curator at the Penticton Art Gallery. "The amount of volume of noise that these guys can produce is a pretty incredible spectacle to see."

The world tour is endorsed by the Dalai Lama.

"The Richard Gere Foundation, along with the Dalai Lama set up a monastery in Atlanta Georgia, so these monks spend half their year in Atlanta Georgia," Crawford said. "There job is to tour around North America and internationally, just to create awareness for their culture.”

The monks will be in Penticton until Sunday and will be creating a mandala that will be released into flowing water on Sunday afternoon, at the closing ceremonies.

On Saturday Sept. 16, the monks perform at the Cleland Community Theatre, showcasing traditional music, dancing and regalia.

"It will showcase their dancing, their music they do, this multi tone polyphonic singing, which is pretty amazing and they have these amazing instruments that they’ll use," Crawford said.

There will be an abbreviated version of the show at 3:00 p.m. and at 7:30 p.m. the full two hour performance will take place.

"It will be a real window into Tibetan culture and the culture of the monks," he said.

The community is welcome to attend sessions with the monks at Get Bent Yoga & Dance, where a series of daily lectures and prayer ceremonies will take place.

The closing ceremonies take place at 4:00 p.m., Sept. 17, with a parade starting at the Penticton Art Gallery and ending at the Penticton Ikeda Japanese Garden.

Tickets can be purchased for any of the events at the Penticton Art Gallery
