Meteorite Man

Look up in the sky. It's a...rock.

Adrian Karolko, known as 'the Meteorite Man,' met with Penticton residents on Friday afternoon to discuss space rocks. AKA meteors.

Karolko says that meteors come to earth in the form of 'fireballs' that can be seen from great distances.

“When you see a 'fireball' it is still very high up in the air,” says Karolko.

He says that meteors come to earth in all sizes, from pea-sized to chunks of rock the size of cars. Also, there is nothing particularly special about the components of meteorites.

“There is nothing exotic about them, they are made of the same minerals we have here on earth,” says Karolko.

Over two dozen people came to the library to discuss meteorites with the Meteorite Man, many of them bringing in their own specimens for identification. One women brought a rock she found many years ago and had always wondered about. It was identified as a piece of obsidian, a black volcanic rock that native Americans used to make arrowheads.
