Loan bails out curling club

Penticton city council is bailing out the Penticton Curling Club with a $45,000 loan, as the club approaches what could be its biggest season ever.

Manager Cathy Jones was in front of council Tuesday asking for help fixing the club’s 42-year-old ice plant, which she said failed 15 times last year.

“We have paid $7,400 just in this last month,” she said, adding a technician recommended they replace the plant rather than spend any more money on it.

The club is set to host a World Curling Tour event in November, attracting 24 teams from around the globe. The ice will also be used for practice during the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, the Canadian female national championships, Jan. 27 to Feb. 4.

Jones originally asked for $89,000 to completely refurbish the ice plant, but was instead given a loan by councillors for a bare-bones repair job.

The club’s lease with the city dictates they handle all maintenance of the facility.
