ONA running for peace

The Okanagan Nation Alliance is holding a commemorative run from Hedley to Osoyoos Thursday to honour the 1990 OKA Run for Peace.

The original run took place over six weeks and saw more than 73 Okanagan Nation members run from Syilx to Kanehsatà:ke territory to show solidarity with the Mohawk resistance to developments on their sacred burial grounds during the Oka Crisis.

“This Commemoration Run is meant to honour and recognize this time in Syilx history where the Syilx Nation took a stand for peace and solidarity with the Kahnawá:ke during the Oka Crisis and whereby all Indian Nations continue to do so to protect their lands, peoples and resources,” Chief Clarence Louie said.

An ONA news release states “the same struggles that ignited the 1990 Oka Crisis, persist within the Okanagan territory.”

Chief of the Lower Similkameen Indian Band, Keith Crow said it is a “disgrace” they have still not found a resolution to the disturbed ancestral burial grounds found last year in a Cawston orchard.

The run on Thursday will pass by the sacred site, and will take place over eight hours, in a relay format, allowing the young and old to participate. Runners will come from various ONA communities.

Ellen Gabriel, a Kanehsatà:ke Mohawk Territory indigenous human rights activist and a key spokesperson during the Oka Crisis will take part in the event.

The run coincides with the ONA annual general assembly in Osoyoos.
