Penticton celebrates Pride

South Okanagan Similkameen Pride will be holding a number of celebrations over the next few days.

A Pride Week Proclamation was read on Penticton City Hall steps by Mayor Andew Jakubeit Thursday morning to kick off the week's events.

"There is pride and transgender flags all over the city, coming into both and we have had lots of positive feedback from people who have seen the flags up and feel comfortable and like Penticton is a safe and welcoming community," said Karen Davy SOS Pride member.

SOS Pride will have an entry at the Peachfest Grand Parade on Saturday, and would love for the community to walk with them.

"Wear your Pride, fly your flags, blow bubbles or just simply join us as we parade by," she said. "Bring the kids, the pets, your friends and allies, everyone is welcome."

To finish the weekend, on Sunday at Skaha Lake Park SOS Pride is asking the public to join them for a picnic and barbecue from noon to 3 p.m.  They will be set up on the southeast side of the park between the water park and concession.

"Any money that we raise goes back into our community," Davy said. "We have partnered with YES youth and the City of Penticton to do some youth events."

The by-donation barbecue is open to everyone. SOS Pride memberships will be available for $15.
