Crowdfunding for coding

A GoFundMe has been launched in support of an after school program that teaches students digital literary skills in a fun environment, says chief librarian Heather Buzzell.

The Penticton Public Library has launched a crowdfunding campaign, to raise awareness and support for its first After School Coding Club, starting this fall. The program is for kids ages 8 to 12.

“Penticton currently does not have a similar program that is accessible and free. Our goal is to provide youth with opportunities to explore these technologies, while supporting education and creative exploration,” Buzzell said.

The Coding Club is part of Science. Technology. Engineering. Arts. Math. (S.T.E.A.M.), which is a program that teaches 21st century skills. The first step to developing the program in Penticton is the launch of the After School Coding Club, according to Buzzell.

This pilot project will introduce 10 students to the fun, educational, and skill-building art of coding.

“This is a great opportunity to teach kids the basics of coding, a skill that is in high demand,” continues Buzzell, “hopefully there are some budding programmers out there who will be inspired to create!”

Contributions to the $5000 GoFundMe campaign will go towards the purchase of hardware, including Chromebooks, "MakeyMakeys", coding board games, and more fun devices for kids to code.
