Local farm wins gold

A South Okanagan farm and winery is making a name for itself internationally after winning top awards in Germany.

Covert Farms Family Estate, in Oliver recently won four gold medals, one of which was a Top Gold award, at the International Organic Wine Awards for their 100 per cent organic wines.

"We are super excited about this win because it compares us against our international peers,” Covert Farms winemaker and co-proprietor Gene Covert said. “Organic winemaking takes a lot of dedication and can have some higher risks, so to have the opportunity to see where we stand on a world scale is affirming.”

The International Organic Wine Award started eight years ago, but this is the first time Covert Farms Family Estate have entered their wine, according to Covert.

Covert Farms competed against more than 1,000 other wines from countries all around the world. The wine that earned them the Top Gold honour is the Covert Farms' 2013 Grand Reserve Zinfandel, which earned 96 points.

Their other gold medal winners include the 2014 Grand Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, scoring 94 points, the 2013 Amicitia at 92 points, the 2014 Grand Reserve Pinot Noir at 91 points and the 2015 Grand Reserve Roussanne at 90 points.
