Craft beer and cardio

Craft beer and cardio exercise don’t typically go hand-in-hand, but organizers behind this summer’s Penticton “beer run” are looking to change that.

The Hoodoo Adventure Company is planning a 10km run down the KVR trail, with tasting stops from all five Penticton breweries on the route.

Buses will pick up participants from the SOEC parking lot and take them out to the starting line at the Square One Hops farm, where Tin Whistle Brewing will have the first tasting station.

The route will then head into town to Cannery Brewing and onwards to tasting stops by Bad Tattoo, Barley Mill and Highway 97 Brewing. The route will end at the KVS Pub with live music.

Organizer Lyndie Hill was initially considering a “beer mile” for the Fest of Ale, but with past experience race directing the Half-Corked Marathon in Oliver, she felt there was an opportunity to showcase Penticton’s craft beer scene the same way.

“I just thought it would be cool to tie in the KVR, the beautiful scenery, Penticton is so beautiful and we have the hops farm there, which ties in the farm to brewery thing,” she said.

Registration for the event opened this week, and costs $65 until May 10. The fee includes the shuttle ride, tastings, a branded 32oz grunt, a beer at the finish line and $5 of food at KVS. Hill says feedback has been “very positive” so far, with some stating they are coming from far or planning a vacation around the event.

One-hundred per cent of the net proceeds of the race will be donated to the non-profit Youth Outdoor Recreation Society.

The race runs on June 3rd.
