Deer In The News

Deer are making news in the Okanagan this week.

In Kelowna on Tuesday, a deer was killed by a dog in an-off leash park.

Witnesses say they can identify the man who owns the dog.

Conservation Officers say it is possible the man will face charges for allowing his dog to run down a wild animal, and that pets caught chasing wildlife can be shot on sight.

According to CHBC News, there are signs clearly visible in the park stating the dogs must be kept on a leash at all times, but they are not always obeyed as many dog owners don't believe their dog would ever do something as bad as chasing a deer to death.

Residents in Princeton are having a deer problem as well. But in their case, the deer are the problem.

According to city officials, deer in that area have become accustomed to humans and as a result, are becoming more bold and less fearful in their search for food. Some residents started leaving food out for the deer, resulting in deer that aren't bashful about coming into residential areas.

The town has passed a bylaw, making it illegal for residents to feed the animals in the hopes that will make the deer a little less content to stick around populated areas.
