Winery to take over Penmar

A new winery is coming to downtown Penticton.

Council approved the project, which would renovate the old Penmar Theatre downtown into a winery with a tasting and sales area, offices and a food and beverage space.

The proposal survived public consultations Tuesday night, with one member of the public coming forward, raising concerns over potential emissions of odours and late-night sound from the machinery and a patio.

Time Estate Winery president Harry McWatters told council that he expected the winery to comply with all laws governing noise and emissions.

“We would hope that any odours that come from our winery will be, aim to be pleasant ones,” McWatters said, adding that the issue of noise and emissions had been addressed by the winery.

Part of the proposal was to maintain one of the theatres, to be used for wine-related seminars, arts and theatre space, movies and live entertainment.

Coun. Max Picton pointed to that particular aspect as maintaining an iconic part of Penticton, while developing downtown.

“I’d be extremely happy to support this development,” he said.

“I think this is a fantastic addition to our downtown and I really love the fact that, while it may not be a heritage building, it is an iconic building and the fact that some of the original building materials are going to be showcased in that is fantastic.”

Coun. Judy Sentes said the project will be instrumental in bringing more life to the downtown area.

“We talk about revitalizing our downtown, and this is going to be a significant revitalization.”
