Noise in the night

UPDATE: 9:53 A.M.

Barbara Mills and her husband were roused from their sleep by the loud noise.

"It sounded like a big explosion, like big," said Mills. "Not like a bird cannon or anything. First I didn't know if it was an explosion or an earthquake type of thing."

She said she has only heard a noise like that in town back in 2013 when a bomb exploded on a person's property.

Mills said it sounded like it came from north of Oliver.

ORIGINAL: 9:34 A.M.

Several residents in the Oliver area claim they were awakened by a loud noise, possibly an explosion, around 3 a.m. this morning.

As of Friday morning, the Oliver RCMP is saying the origin of the noise has not been identified.

"It was a loud noise," said Sgt. Blaine Gervais, area commander for the Oliver detachment. "Calling it an explosion means there was some evidence something exploded which we have no reports of."

RCMP officers were dispatched after they received four calls from concerned residents, but found nothing.

The fire department could not be immediately reached for comment.

"We have loud bangs and pops going off all the time to scare the birds away,” Gervais said, although he did not personally hear it.
