Medical pot for kids

A fundraiser for sick kids in need of medical cannabis will be held Saturday in Penticton.

Rockn' for Kids is organized by family and friends of Kyla Williams, a three-year-old Summerland girl who has severe epilepsy.

A year ago, doctors told Kyla's family they had exhausted their treatment options. Suffering hundreds of seizures a day, Kyla faced a bleak future.

In desperation, the family turned to cannabis oil, a compound high in cannabidiol (CBD) used to treat conditions such as epilepsy. Almost immediately, Kyla showed dramatic improvement, later corroborated by medical tests.

After hearing her story, other distraught famlies begin contacting the Williams, and last May they started the group Medical Cannabis for Sick Kids. It now provides financial help to eight families with children who have various forms of epilepsy.

Some of the children and their families will be at Rockn' for Kids.

The event at Orchard House will feature live music by the Yardkatz, River Line and Forever Young. A dinner of pulled pork or veggie burgers and dessert is included in the $25 ticket.

Doors open at 1 p.m. and dinner is at 6 p.m. Tickets are available in Summerland at The Beanery and Cozy Bay, and in Penticton at the Dragon's Den and Bad Tattoo.
