No summer programs at centre

All summer programs and events have been cancelled at The Centre at Naramata, according to a statement released on Friday by the centre.

The cancellation is effective today (Friday) and is through to Aug. 31, 2014. The reason given is there remains no collective agreement between the employer and CUPE Local 608 bargaining unit.

"The decision to cancel summer at the centre was a difficult one that didn't come easily," said Jim Simpson, director of strategic partnerships and development. "With the labour dispute between the centre and its employees, we are unable to provide summer experiences as planned."

Cancelled are all events booked to the end of August, including summer experiences, concerts and private events. Registered participants will be contacted by June 30 about refunds and/or reimbursements.

A decision regarding fall events and programs is pending a collective agreement.

It is management's strong desire to return to the bargaining table, so that we can reach a resolution to this situation and return to offering centre programs and hosting events for the wider community, said the statement.

CUPE 608 members provide a wide range of services to keep the guest accommodation facility running year-round. Management served notice of their intention to contract out a wide range of jobs in December, 2013.

Bargaining began in early April, with contracting out as a key issue on the table.

The workers started picketing at the centre on May 15.
