Fire victim in court

12:20 p.m. update: Michael McWhinnie's court date for sentencing has been set for June 23.

Original story 11 a.m.: A sentencing date for an Osoyoos man, whose home burned to the ground last week, was slated to be set in Penticton court on Monday.

Michael McWhinnie pleaded guilty earlier this year to theft over $5,000 and fraud charges, related to the theft of $40,000 from the Osoyoos Rural Fire Protection District.

McWhinnie served as a trustee for the district for a number of years.

Then last Wednesday night, his home on 33rd Street went up in flames and was deemed to be a write-off by the Osoyoos Fire Department.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
