A celebration was held Saturday in Penticton to welcome WestJet to town.
The airline made the announcement last week that they would begin offering nonstop flights between Calgary and Penticton beginning in October.
Lots of community members were at the event Saturday sharing their excitement over the new offering from WestJet Encore.
Mike from Oliver said the addition of WestJet will be a huge asset to Penticton and people of the south Okanagan, who will no longer have to drive all the way to Kelowna for a flight.
Todd, a Penticton resident, said now he wont have to worry about gas and traveling to Kelowna for a flight for his company and can drive just a few minutes from his house to the Penticton Airport. He added it should streamline things when his girlfriend visits from Ontario.
Heather from OK Falls was also thrilled by the news the airline will be servicing Penticton. She believes that this will bring more tourist and money to Penticton and surrounding areas.
More service between Penticton and Alberta is something the community has been requesting for quite some time.
Service begins Oct. 26.
