The District of Peachland will be building a new childcare centre next to the elementary school after receiving $12.4 million in funding from the provincial government.
When complete, this new building will provide 104 childcare spaces for children, while also creating jobs for childcare workers in Peachland.
“I think 100 for our town is great, it’s a game changer for us, it will allow us to attract families and to keep families here in our own community,” said District of Peachland Mayor Patrick Van Minsel.
“It’s part of the larger vision we have for this town, so also having the 100 rental units next to this childcare and next to this school geared to families is just excellent for this. Like I said, it’s a real game changer for us.”
The District of Peachland believes this is the perfect location for a childcare centre and with the help of BGC Okanagan, these children will grow into great community members in the future.
“It’s near the school, it’s near all of the businesses we have, the grocery store, we have our library there, we have public transit in the neighbourhood, and by doing this here it just helps us to create a better community,” said Van Minsel.
“For us, the Boys and Girls Club was just a logical fit. They are already working together with us in a building we have for after school, preschool and during the day childcare, so this is our ideal partner.”
Minister of Municipal Affairs Anne Kang says people working at the childcare centre will be paid well for their work and that it’s important to have quality workers taking care of these children.
“It’s very hard to retain high quality child care providers when we are paying them $20 or $21 because that really doesn’t match the cost of living here, and so being able to provide them up to $29 an hour we are able to retain high, good quality child care, but also attract young people to pursue this as a career.”
The District of Peachland is unsure when the new centre will be completed, but shovels are expected to break ground sometime in the early new year.
