A blast from the past

On October 31st, 1952 the U.S. tested out it's very first hydrogen bomb in Operation Ivy-Mike.

This video shows you just how incredible the explosion was; in fact, the enormous explosion was the 4th largest device ever tested by the U.S.

The mushroom cloud climbed to 57,000 feet in only 90 seconds, entering the stratosphere. One minute later it reached 108,000 feet, eventually stabilizing at a ceiling of 120,000 feet. Just 30 minutes after the test the mushroom stretched an incredible 60 miles across.
