Oliver Fire Chief headed for retirement after 33 years at the department

Fire Chief to hang up cap

The Town of Oliver has announced that they are searching for a new fire chief, as after eight years in the position, Bob Graham has shared that he's headed for retirement at the end of the year.

Graham has chief since 2017, previously serving as deputy fire chief.

"It's been a pleasure to work with the community. We've had great support throughout the years," he said, noting that he's been proud to lead his team through tackling many unfortunate situations.

"We're there to help. And when you're having your worst time, that's when we're doing our best and we're doing our best job. It's not that we enjoy it, or anything like that, it's just that we train really hard to do these jobs, and then when it happens, we're able to help people."

Graham said he has lots of good memories and lots of sad memories from his work.

"I've been in the fire department in Oliver for 33 years. And I think this is long enough."

The chief has also led his team through local fundraisers and events, focusing on giving back to the community he serves.

One thing Graham is looking forward to is not waking up in the middle of the night to go to a fire call.

"It's happened just too many times, all kinds of family events and whatever. There's an alarm and away you go," he said with a chuckle.

"I'm looking forward to retiring after 33 years. I've enjoyed my time, and now it's time for somebody else to take over."

Now that the job has been posted, both internally and externally, there will be a committee that will interview all all potential candidates.

The Fire Chief is responsible for managing all aspects of the Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department, including administration, volunteer recruitment and management, fire suppression, training and fire prevention activities.

The town said the ideal Fire Chief will be a forward thinker, providing strategic direction to develop and implement policies and actions to ensure the continuity of fire protection service in the Oliver area.
